Today is the day we bid adieu to 2011 and prepare to welcome 2012. I don’t know how the end of the year effects you, but for me it’s a time of reflection and planning. Several years back, I would have been looking forward to whatever
bar hopping NYE festivities we had planned and I’d know that I’d be spending the first day of 2012 on the couch (or possibly the bathroom floor.)
It’s amazing how time and wisdom changes things. And kids. The people at Johnson & Johnson aren’t kidding when they say a baby changes everything. Try having two. The highlights of NYE 2011 for me will be a late lunch with one of my closest friends, maybe a little retail therapy and coming home to a quiet house. Many people would ask why, since we’ve shipped the kids off to the grandparents, aren’t we going out on NYE? My answer: I’m past that. I’m not 22 anymore, and I don’t need to act like I am to be happy. Now, don’t be confused… I still enjoy my indulgences every now and again, but it’s usually not out with the masses. People are too crazy (and just plain dumb) for that to be fun anymore.
So, I’ll be sitting here tonight with my hubby. I’ll probably have wine in hand. And, I’ll be thinking about where I was this time in 1998. I’d just had my 18th birthday and was a little sad because I just knew Jason was going to propose to me on Christmas…but he hadn’t. (Yes, 18 is young to think about marriage. No, I was not pregnant. Yes, I was crazy – still kind of am. Yes, it all worked out.) He proposed just after midnight, so technically it was the first thing that happened to me in 1999 and it made my year.
I’m a little sad this year too. It’s far more complicated than what I’ll share here, but 2011 didn’t end the way I hoped it would. It’s ok though. I’m going to try to look toward 2012 with a smile on my face and hope in my heart that everything will fall into place just like it did 13 years ago.
And now that this post has taken a very different direction than I intended, I’m still going to close it out with my most popular recipes of 2011, based on your traffic to Mama.Mommy.Mom.
My S’mores Cookies from back in November were a huge hit! Maybe it was all of those cookie swaps in December…
Quinoa has had a big place in my diet in 2011 and it appears that my Three Cheese Quinoa and Broccoli Casserole was a big hit all around!
These Spicy Sweet Potato and Bacon Bites were to die for! I promise. If I didn’t already have dinner planned, I’d probably add these to tonight’s menu!
My most popular recipe this year… Simple Rosemary Grilled Pork Chops. I can’t wait for the fresh herbs again in the spring! Grilling is one of my favorite ways to cook in the summer, but you can grill in the winter too!
Did you have a favorite post from the site in 2011? I’d love to hear about it! What are your plans for 2012? Are you making a New Year resolution?
