Around a Winter Fire {And Then… Story Starters for Family Time}

This post was sponsored by Duraflame.  Duraflame provided Mama.Mommy.Mom. with the And Then, Story Starters set and fire logs to make our family time cozy and special.  No additional compensation was received for this post and all opinions are those of Mama.Mommy.Mom. and no one else.

And Then Story Starters DuraFlameA World of Pure Imagination

I was blessed with a daughter with a big imagination.  A BIG imagination.  She has always loved to tell stories.  One of the first videos I ever posted on YouTube was of her telling me a bedtime story.  Unicorns, fairies and mermaids – she loves them all.  There are only so many variations of fairytale stories one can come up (despite what Disney may think) and eventually both she and I ran out of original material.

As she got a little older, our attention turned to learning to read.  Being able to tell me a story became less important than being able to read me a story that someone else wrote.

Stories Around the Fire DuraFlameReading, I’ve Got That

It’s amazing how much my girl learned in Kindergarten.  It was like she struggled with reading one day, and suddenly got it the next.  I got tired of hearing the same books over and over again (she had favorites) and it was clear that she was reading better than expected for her age, so I started to encourage more storytelling and writing (spelling was next on our list of things to tackle.)  It wasn’t long though before we were back in a story rut.

Having worked with Duraflame over the summer, and having already been a fan of their product long before, I was excited when I heard from them again in the Fall.  When they reached out and asked if I’d like to spend some quality time with my family and try out a cool reading/story telling set, there was no way I was going to turn them down.

Story Starters DuraFlameAnd Then…

I really wasn’t sure what girlie would think of the story starters.  Sometimes she’s very agreeable when it comes to family time, and sometimes she’s not.  As it happens, she was home with me when the package arrived.  She always gets excited when a package shows up.  We opened the box, she checked it out and I could immediately tell that this was going to be a hit with her.  Our evenings are so busy here sometimes that we have to put aside a lot of the funner family things for the weekend.  This was no exception.  I wanted to make sure we really had time to enjoy the activity and give it some real time and attention.

All I heard about every evening for the next week was the story starters.

Storytime

The next Friday evening, we gathered the chairs around our fire pit, started a Duraflame log and pulled out the story starters.  It was nice to cozy up around a fire and spend some time together.  And, with the Duraflame log, I knew set up would be quick (my kiddos seem to lack in the patience department) and I wouldn’t waste any of our precious time fighting with wood and matches.

The And Then… Story Starters were a HUGE hit!  There are 20 different beginnings, each on a thick board-book type sheet, and they come in a decorative box (very well made) for safe keeping.  The sheets are loose, as opposed to being bound like a book, which makes it very convenient when you have more than one child and they all want to look through the story starters at once.   You can see an example of one of the starters above.  The idea is that the starters are generic enough to be used over and over again.  With 20 different options, you could do one a night for quite a while without having any of the same old boring storylines.

Your Family Time?

Thank you to Duraflame for helping us spend some time together as a family.  If you have an imaginative storyteller in your family, you might want to check out the And Then… Story Starters for yourself.

    I love this idea! What a fun book. We have done activities like this on long car rides and it is always so much fun to see what the kids come up with. :)

    This product seems great. I used to lov emaking up stories hwen I was little and writing them when I got older. Now, i haven’t done it in years because I got stuck on a teenage level of creative writing skill, and that just didn’t satisfy me.

  5. I love Duraflame we actually keep a box of their logs next to our fireplace in case the power goes out, we trust them that much. To know that they sent this book to you for your daughter gives it two stamps of approval, yours and theirs. I’m going to look around and see if I can find it for my niece because she is the EXACT same way about stories as your daughter :)

    I’ve been meaning to get our backyard fire pit set-up for the last three years or so, but now you’ve inspired me. Hopefully I’ll find time this year…
