Brewing Comfort One K-Cup At A Time
When my friends at #CollectiveBias asked me what made coffee special for me, I knew my answer immediately. Coffee brings me to my happy place. There is something about sitting down with a warm cup, clutching it between two hands and feeling my fingers heat up from the outside in. I can close my eyes and close out the world, at least for a minute or two. It centers me, brings me comfort. When I make a cup of coffee, that’s what I’m doing – I’m #CookinComfort – one K-Cup at a time.
I’m not sure how I survived all of those years in my early 20s when I didn’t own a coffee maker… oh, wait. Yes I do. More disposable income and living in a city with a variety of coffee shops available just about everywhere, that explains it. Hitting up the coffee shop and bookstore were a relaxing ritual for me between the ages of 18 and 24. I’d get my cup of mocha/frappa goodness, find a book and a cozy up in a fluffy chair for hours. Getting older, having kids and becoming more reasonable about how I spend my money – and let’s be honest, moving farther out of the city – has put a cramp in my coffee shop lifestyle.
After having my daughter back in 2006, I really got into coffee drinking again. Admittedly, at that point it was as much about the energy boost as it was the flavor (or anything else for that matter) but it wasn’t long before I found coffee to be an amazing way to connect with others, not just myself. My old ritual of coffee and a book slowly became coffee and a play date for the kids. Granted, when my daughter was an infant, it was more of a play date for me.
If you’ve had a baby, you know how isolating those first few months can feel. The onslaught of visitors dies off pretty quickly and you’re left at home with just yourself and this little person who doesn’t do much beyond sleep, eat and cry. Coffee became my connection to the other adults of the world. I have so many fond memories of those play dates. I dug up a video a few months ago of one such play date when my daughter was only crawling. My closest friendships, and hers, were forged over a cup or coffee or two.
More Than Beans
Over the years, I’ve become a little bit of a coffee snob. When Keurig hit the market, I was in heaven! So many choices… flavors, roasts, one cup or 3. I’ve tried a lot of K-Cups through out the last few years and there have definitely been some that I didn’t like. One of my favorite things about having a Keurig is being able to have what I want, when I want it. I enjoy exploring the coffee aisle at Walmart to see what’s new and interesting. Even my daughter (remember her from the video?) loves to get in on the action. “Ooh, look at that one! It’s chocolate. You should get that.”
The Gevalia Mocha Latte did look really good, and well, as a former coffee shop frequenter, I love a good latte.
After checking out the particulars, especially the nutritional information, I knew that the Gevalia Mocha Latte would be a much smarter choice than a mocha latte from my favorite coffee shop (yes, I still have a favorite – even if I don’t visit it as often as I used to.) My biggest concern was whether or not it would have that true ‘espresso’ flavor.
Making the Gevalia Mocha Latte was just as easy as brewing any other K-Cup. There’s two simple additional steps… just tear open the froth packet and pour it into your cup, brew your K-Cup right over it (on the small cup setting), and give it a stir. The latte froths right up! As far as simplicity and delivering a true latte type brew, the Gevalia Mocha Latte exceeded all of my expectations. As far as flavor, I was initially concerned that I would end up with frothy cup of hot chocolate milk, but was pleasantly surprised by a very rich espresso flavor that wasn’t at all over powered by the mocha. I was extremely pleased!
Since becoming a stay-at-home coffee drinker (and a mom), I’ve discovered that the best time to sit down with my cup of coffee and really connect with myself is at night, after the little ones are tucked snugly in their beds. After getting my hands on the Gevalia Mocha Latte K-Cups, my nightly ritual has become a warm, comforting Mocha Latte by the fireplace, with optional kitty-cuddles. It relaxes me and gives me a chance to reflect on my day without the chaos of my mind taking over. It’s just me, my Gevalia Mocha Latte and the cat. You can’t get much more comfortable than that.
Are you a coffee drinker too? Maybe you like a latte from time to time, or just a daily cup of regular coffee with cream and sugar…. Do you find coffee to be a way to find comfort and connect, just like me? If you’re a K-Cup connoisseur, have you tried the Gevalia K-Cups? If not, you should! They are amazing!
Happy coffee drinking!
