We love Discovery Place and that’s no joke. There is always something interesting, exciting or spectacular to draw the kids in and keep their attention and energy focused for a while. We really need that, especially during the summer. We need it a lot. Summer break just started and I’ve already hit my limit with ‘I’m bored’. That goodness for summer camp and all of the wonderful places Charlotte has to offer.
The newest exhibit at Discovery Place lets you get totally en-GROSS-ed with an interactive, slightly different view of the animal kingdom.
Discovery Place Animal Grossology opened June 1 and shows off the gross side of animal science. Through sophisticated animatronics, interactive learning games, and imaginative animated characters adapted from the best-selling Grossology children’s book series by author/science teacher Sylvia Branzei, the exhibition offers a fresh take on disgusting things animals do.
Animal Grossology introduces scientific concepts in ways that make kids laugh by focusing on fun stuff like vomit, slime, poop and the oozingly icky science behind why animals do what they do. Did you know that cows are one of the gassiest animals on Earth and actually produce the greenhouse gas methane? Seriously! They are the #1 source of it. Learn why the dung beetle is nature’s living pooper scooper (ew!) and why scientists are studying slug and snail slime production for clues in treating cystic fibrosis.
In addition to Animal Grossology, Discovery Place has lots of other cool exhibits to check out too. Some of our favorites are Cool Stuff (who doesn’t want to say they’ve laid on a bed of nails?), Kid Science (I love that the kids can sort of free-range there with minimal supervision) and Discovery 3D Theatre (super cool educational ‘movies’ in 3D!). We’re also huge fans of the IMAX Dome Theatre.
If you need a fun way to entertain your kids in the Charlotte area this summer, here’s your chance…
Mama.Mommy.Mom. is giving away a family 4-pack of tickets to Discovery Place Animal Grossology, which also includes admission to the entire museum. To enter, leave a comment telling us what gross thing the animals in your life do. It could be a pet, a random woodland creature you’ve encountered or an animal from you past. If you can’t come up with something, then just tell us your favorite animal and maybe we can dig up a random, gross fact for you!
Entries will close June 25th at 11:59 PM, so don’t wait!
Animal Grossology will be at Discovery Place until September 2. For more information on the exhibition visit http://www.discoveryplace.org/.
