Going to the Movies #SundaySupper Style {Not So Fried Green Tomatoes}

Hollywood has a way of working into various aspects of our lives.  There’s nothing that can’t be inspired by a movie.  It could be hair, make-up, a trip, or a name (my son’s name is Cullen…).  The list goes on and on.  Have you ever found yourself thinking about a movie, maybe a specific scene, and then craving a certain food?

One of my all time favorite movies is Fried Green Tomatoes.  It never fails… if I watch it, there are two foods I can’t get off my mind.  The first is barbeque – if you’ve watched the movie, you know why – and the second, obviously, is fried green tomatoes.

Here in the South, we have this knack for taking healthy foods and turning them into something heart attack inducing.  I mean, we’ll pretty much deep fry anything.  But do you have to deep fry green tomatoes to get that fantastic bright bite and that crispy crunch that I’ve come to love so much?  In short, no.  No you don’t.

Not So Fried Green Tomatoes

Serves: 4
  • 4 Green Tomatoes
  • Cooking Spray
  • 1 Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Pepper
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1 Cup Italian Bread Crumbs
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Slice off the tops of the tomatoes, making sure you cut away all of the hard stem from the center.
  3. Slice your tomatoes between ¼ and ½ inch thick.\
  4. Mix the flour, salt and pepper together and set aside.
  5. Beat the eggs and combine with the milk.
  6. Dredge each slice in the flour, dip in the egg mixture and coat with bread crumbs.
  7. Place the slices on sprayed baking rack set into a foil lined pan.
  8. Spray the tops of the tomatoes lightly with cooking spray.
  9. Bake 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.

    My husband loves fried green tomatoes and I can’t wait for tomato season to start. The good thing is green tomatoes are the first to harvest and I’ll have to try your healthier version and make it for him.

    Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my ultimate favorite movies. I reference it all the time. I also love eating Fried Green Tomatoes but always feel guilty. This is perfect!

    I almost ALMOST wanted to make the same dish! I love oven “frying” things like okra and green tomatoes…it’s great that you can still get the satisfying crunch with baking as you can with frying…guilt free!

  36. I loved that movie – but I have never had or made fried green tomatoes….I actually hate tomatoes. I know! That is a shocker! 🙂 One of these days I’ll have to make them though, because my husband says he loves them. I guess he has earned them after all these years 🙂

      You really should try them. They aren’t at all like ripe tomatoes. The texture and flavor are completely different. Now I’m craving them myself!
