I’m not sure what I was thinking when I decided to take a monkey with us to the beach. Yes, a monkey. He actually required less attention than my kids. I don’t remember where I saw the request for host families, but it was several months ago. I reached out to Shinko’s mom and asked if he’d like to travel with us to the NC Coast on our family vacation. As luck has it, Shinko’s schedule meshed just perfectly with ours and he arrived the day before we headed to the beach.
He’s a crazy little dude, we actually found him hanging from the dining room light at one point, but tons of fun. Cullen wouldn’t give him a moment’s peace for the first 12 hours he was here. Or the next 12 hours really. Heck, even on Sunday, Cullen still had him in a firm grasp. (My theory on the light hanging was that Shinko felt safe there. Little did he know, Addison and Cullen both have monkey like climbing skills.)
Tomorrow, Shinko heads off to his next host family. We’re very sad to see him go, but hope to add one of his siblings as a permanent resident of the Rippy Household soon!
Part of the fun of hosting Shinko was to help him write letters home to his mom. Here’s the letter we helped him write on Sunday, August 12th about traveling with us to the beach…
I was very tired yesterday, but got to take a nap with my new friend Cullen in his car. We were in the car for a long time. It’s a long way to the beach. Cullen gave me lots of hugs and kisses and I really liked snuggling with him. His sister Addison is nice, but I like Cullen best.
We got to ride on a really big boat today. It was so big that we could drive our car on it! A lot of other people did too. I got to see some really cool birds, and we even fed them pretzels. See them flying over my head? They scared me a little at first because they were getting so close, but Cullen’s mom said it was ok and that they wouldn’t touch me.
I’m having so much fun, but I miss you too. I’ll write again soon…
*** If you want to invite him into your home, his mom put together some info on hosting Shinko.
