I am in love! Two days ago, I made the biggest hobby related purchase I’ve ever made. I purchased Photoshop CS4. W.O.W. I’m not even sure I can eloquently describe how much I love this software. To be fair, I used my I will always be a college student discount and got it for $199, not the retail price of $699. At $699, it would have never happened.
I’m stumbling my way through learning the basics, and I may be tripping over myself for a while. I ordered some books by Scott Kelby to help me along. I flipped through one at a friend’s house the other night. She was gracious enough to let me sit with her while she did some editing. Check out her work – Marin Mason Photography
So, here’s my first attempt at editing in Photoshop. I couldn’t get the color quite how I wanted it, but after 3 hours I kind of gave up. I’m going to take another stab at it today.
These were taken with the Canon Rebel XSi, 18-55mm (kit) lens. 55mm, f/5.6, 1/60, ISO 400.

Critique is welcomed and certainly appreciated! I know I have A LOT to learn!

Are you shooting in RAW Jamie? It opens up a whole new window of options if you are. Yay for you! I love my CS4
Mostly in JPEG. I’d love, love, love any links to great (free) actions or tutorials you’ve used
If you set your camera to RAW when you put your pictures on your computer and open up PS literally a window should open up. You will be able to adjust your white balance and the blues/reds/yellows that show up from our camera. Problem is the files are HUGE so you have to keep them under control by processing and then turning them into jpeg. I highly suggest joining http://www.ilovephotography.com and looking under their “share a square” subforum b/c I found a bunch of neat actions there. The Pioneer Woman also has some on her blog. If you have time also check youtube. I saw a suggestion once to set the white balance on your camera to flash rather than auto. I really like the results from doing that and now it is how my camera is constantly set b/c I don’t have a gray card.
Thanks for the shout out to my contest.
Ditto on what Jessie just said…editing in RAW will blow your mind! And ditto again on Pioneer Woman’s actions – love them!
