The past few years have been a real journey for me. I was never what most would consider fit, even when I was very active. Being fit is something I’ve been working toward for a while. It’s a journey that I am sure I will continue for quite some time. But, like with most journeys, there are bumps in the road. My bump? The Popliteus.
Admit it. You don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, do you? Don’t worry… I had no idea what it was either. I’ve spent the last 3 months in pain, not really able to run or be very active at all. After a visit to a sports medicine doctor last week, apparently this tiny muscle in the back of my knee is the cause of all of my pain. Three x-rays told us that my knee, structurally, looks great! Now, I need to stay off that great knee for eight weeks. Nothing that causes impact; gentle exercise only. Well, one of my goals for 2015 was to get back into yoga.
As a whole, 2014 felt like one giant time-crunch. One of the first things to fall victim to my lack of time was my weekly (sometimes twice a week) yoga habit. I didn’t realize how much I missed yoga until I hurt my knee running trails back in September. Now that we’ve figured out what’s wrong with my knee, my schedule has settled down some and running is out of the question – It looks like I’ll start tackling my yoga goals sooner rather than later.
First things first, I need new gear. My weight has changed a good bit, and so has my body shape, since I was last practicing. Anyone who practices yoga knows that what you wear is super important. You need clothes that are comfortable, breathable and that move with you. Of course, I ran to Target® to pick up something from the C9 line by Champion.
I needed the full outfit… pants, sports bra and tank top. Ten minutes and done! I love all the colors, fabric options and styles available. The pants I would pick for running are quite different than the pants I chose for yoga, but that wasn’t a problem. No matter what activity you’re looking to outfit yourself for, you will find the style that is right for you. The same is true of sports bras and tops. If you want more support, you can get it. Want less? They’ve got that too.
Now that I’m outfitted, I’m ready to get my yoga on! I’m looking forward to working that Popliteus muscle, strengthening my hamstrings (among other things) and enjoying the flexibility that yoga brings out in me – both in my body and my mind.
Have you suffered from an injury that set you back on your fitness goals? How did you push through?
